I find it incredibly funny when local elected officials who represent far-flung suburbs where people live on acres of land complain in meetings that the county transit agencies aren’t spending money on frequent bus service to their communities 🙄

Like ok yes we know you want a steady supply of housekeepers and minimum wage workers to come labor for you and then go far away at the end of the day but it is not financially viable to send busses an hour out of the city every 15 minutes, Carol

Thankfully we have hit the limits on that in town. Now they might be able to expand some of the outlying highways, but 75, 85, 20, and the perimeter are all set in stone. Now just to wait for the pain to force Marta expansion.

My last commute in Atlanta, '98-'00, started in Virginia-Highland, went to my part time job out in Cumming, then at about 4PM I'd head across Buford Dam over to LZU (Gwinnett County Airport in Lawrenceville ) then about midnight I'd head back down I-85 to Virginia-Highland. 100mi/day on a Suzuki.

I can vouch for the fear of mass transit bringing "crime" (translation: "thugs"; ie, blacks) out of downtown Atlanta into the white-flight exurban areas. Fuck that shit. I wanna be able to get from Athens to ATL airport without having to leave my car in long term parking.

Also I think it’s important to note that (most) people aren’t saying nobody should have a car, what’s at issue is the ability of people to use reliable and affordable public transit if they want to

Also, not for nothing but if city buses made regular stops in those same suburbs the residents would have an absolute conniption.
