Oh yeah, I know the English equivalent, but I couldn’t say when the last time was I heard the subjunctive referred to directly outside my Latin classes. I think even my English teachers did hand-wavey, “It flips from ‘was’ to ‘were’ in that construction because our language is a cruel joke.”
