This is the actual quote apparently - "I have been criticised for not hiring Xabi Alonso or Gareth Barry. But if I signed them, I would have killed Alex Song, Abou Diaby and Denilson."
I know there are Gooners who will never forgive Fabregas for going to Barcelona. But I remember how much he gave Arsenal, including scoring a penalty with a broken leg (against Barcelona!) in 2010.
It’s not that he went there, it’s how he did it. Going on strike when the club gave him everything was completely classless & unnecessary. For me it completely tarnished his reputation. But for many who had never seen a successful team (until this year!) I understand the desire to forgive.
I've been supporting Arsenal since 1978. So I have seen many successful teams. But I guess I was frustrated during the Fabregas years the way he was. It always felt like Arsenal were just one or two players short of being able to seriously challenge for the EPL.
Hmm, i think that’s being generous. My reflection on the Fabregas years were that we were miles off. I’m not saying he wasn’t really good, course he was, but he was absolutely let down by the quality around him & it was more than 2 players being short imo. 1/2
But my main point was that he was always going to leave, his head had been turned more than once & any idea that he was this super-loyal star is utter bollocks. He was a very good player who ran for the hills - in poor style - when a bigger club paid him the same wages. 2/2
It's a bit like the one (and I don't think I've made this up) when asked about Elneny's qualities when we were signing him, Wenger said something like 'he's not a powerhouse type', when we were literallly desperate for a powerhouse type. I liked Elneny btw.
