my favourite opinion about Homer is: it’s an oral text so it is much MORE authentic to listen to the audiobook than to read the Iliad or Odyssey on the page. watching it as a film while people around you eat, drink & chat is more authentic than reading it quietly to yourself in a silent library.

As it was an oral text, would it have been authentic to ask the bard to repeat bits because he was mumbling? Nolan could have done with a bit of that tbh

From internal evidence in Homer: yes people could be unpleasant to bards! (That’s why there’s so much stuff in Homer about how you HAVE to be nice to a bard…)

I tried to make this point about the Iliad when I was meant to be reading it aged 14 and found an old record copy! My teacher did NOT agree with me and kept pushing me back to the book 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ admittedly the source of my argument was laziness rather than authenticity… but hey! 🤭
