Last month, the U.S. gov't asked a court to allow it to use a cell-site simulator, or "stingray," to track a criminal in Ohio. In a rare rebuke, the court denied the warrant, saying it would have also allowed the feds monitor the locations of nearby private citizens "at all times for thirty days."

Seems like a convenient moment to remind everyone that anyone can build their own cell site simulator detector, called a Rayhunter, using some code and a fairly cheap, easily to get mobile hotspot. github.com/EFForg/rayhu... Shout out to @eff.org.
