New: I spoke to Samuel Tunick, the man the U.S. is charging with allegedly wiping his GrapheneOS phone before CBP could search it. “I hope people understand that the charges against me are meant to intimidate people against protecting their data and their privacy.” www.404media.co/the-governme...

This is pretty significant, thank you for posting it

Day for him made more of us use that if it's available on android!! Let's see how bad we can p*** the f****** government off...🤣🤣🤣

Feds got Tunick's phone records, Gmail account, more, and found nothing. Then they charged him for wiping the phone: “At this point, it almost seems like it’s just intended to make my life miserable and discourage participation in any sort of advocacy or activism.” www.404media.co/the-governme...

They suspected he had things-I-am-not-naming on his phone. Don't we have a list of people actually confirmed to have been involved in such crimes and they are not being prosecuted? What was it... the Einstein files? Nah, I don't think so. (/j) So... yeah. I think there are bigger fish to fry.

Why were they trying to search his phone ? Gonna have to do my research on this a bit more....

Why I am changing to an Android Our government is out of control and they are intent on invading our privacy Tomorrow, I switch to an Android!

Put your duress PIN on a piece of paper in your wallet and let them enter it

Duress PINs are a grey area, especially if you enter it as you are being compelled to unlock the device like he did. That will always be seen as destroying evidence. If you think your phone might be searched, wipe it well before you are told to unlock it and restore a backup later.

The other factor here is they took his phone and asked for the PIN, and rather than continue to say “not without my lawyer or a warrant” he gave them the duress PIN. He tricked the agents, and that does not look good. They will find something to charge you with if you do that.

Multiple charges are possible, including giving a false statement to law enforcement, and violation of 18 USC 2232. GrapheneOS already has robust protections against exploitation and data ex filtration, so there was no reason to bother with giving a duress code.

I don't think even Graphene is secure enough to not be cracked at the agency's leisure, after seizing and copying the entire hard drive contents to their own machines.

If it’s encrypted and they don’t have your PIN, it’s not realistically crackable. I don’t know about Graphene but an iPhone in Lockdown Mode or one that has not been unlocked since restarted is considered impossible at the moment.

They absolutely can’t, not without some serious advances in quantum computing. AES is considered unbreakable if correctly implemented. There has been no evidence released or leaked that proper AES has ever been cracked. It is good enough for the government, as it is widely presumed that…

… the non-public ciphers actually used by NSA are very similar to AES, just older. AES was developed publicly and independently, but the principles behind AES are easy to prove mathematically. Top NSA cryptographers likely found the same algorithm a few years sooner and kept it secret.

No one attacks AES, or any other symmetric cipher, they attack the password hash.

What can be retrieved from an iPhone depends on the IOS version, the specific model, whether city is in a BFU or AFU state and whether or not Lockdown Mode enabled. Accessing a GrapheneOS device that has been updated since 2022 is impossible without assistance from the user/owner.

Is that on all hardware platforms that can run it? iOS security is based on the fact you can’t even attempt to extract anything from the Secure Enclave without triggering a tamper. If the hardware has a similar way of protecting the keys, you’re good, but if it’s vulnerable to chip-off dumps…

The Secure Enclave's rate limiting has been bypassed in some models... The Pixel devices have a similar secure computing element called the Titan M/M2

Yes, all models

Pretty difficult to copy the contents in any kind of non destructive manner on a GrapheneOS device. And destroying the device may get you the encrypted contents buy will destroy the secure element necessary to decrypt said contents.

So, Donnie's best & brightest are headed to the lock-up for using self-deleting Signal chats?
