Hydrogen peroxide is highly effective at oxidizing & killing many common green algae species. When competitors like green algae are suppressed, cyanobacteria can gain a foothold. Cyanobacteria organisms (blue‑green algae) are not true algae but bacteria. They can be fatal to ducks & other wildlife.
