State Pension age to rise to 68 for 5m Britons years earlier than expected. Many physically won't be able to work. Longer NHS queues. Many won't live long enough to draw the pension, wealth transferred to the rich who live longer. Cull of the working class. Rich can retire whenever they want.

Millions to retire later under state pension age increase plansAround five millions workers could lose out under the plans, according to a report by the Office for Budget Responsibilitywww.independent.co.uk

Benefits increase as well. I had no choice but to retire from teaching at 60, mainly due to looking after my terminally ill sister but also because I just couldn't carry on due to my own health. Being a Waspi woman had to manage on 7k for 5 years. Neither my Mum or sister made it to pension age.

So I’ve to work a year longer, pay into the state pension for an extra year and I’m going to get less out again and if the triple lock gets removed I’ll get even less. WTAF?!

This should be accompanied by stronger rights for workers to reduce their working hours/days as they age. The new Employment Relations & Employment Rights acts aren't enough. Making it easier to win a time consuming tribunal misses the point of why someone needs a shorter week in the first place.

Building a system of citizen rights requiring the fear of litigation as an enforcement tool primarily helps those able to afford the law. Why does the British state keep doing it?

It was going to be 68, the issue is whether fair notice is given

The numbers of children entering school will drop at least 9% in 2031. Increasing state retirement age increases job blocking. Throttling the natural turnover allowing the younger generation to enter the job market. Then governments scream about younger people not in work. Retirees don't stop

Ответ для Arr David

suddenly paying tax when they retire. Younger people can't contribute if they're not in work. This is the fault of the Thatcher government, because they dissolved & raided payments into a pot of money that went to toward shoring up state pensions. That's your 'black hole' they keep banging on about.

Talk about making policy in a vaccum! Many peiple in their 60s want to continue to work part time, but, even in the public sector, at managerial level and above those jobs simply don't exist. The whole employment system for older people needs a big shake-up.

I could not have worked this long. Apart from which, I found that as I approached even 60, employers didn't want old people. I had an excellent work record & always found it easy to get a job - until I reached late 50s. Friends in my peer group said the same. Also, young people need jobs.

The raising of the pension age takes no account of the health of the cohort of people. It also takes no account of the work they were doing working in an office is less physical but maybe much more stressful.

Ответ для Terry

Correct. Hard physical work often becomes impossible in men's 50s. Office workers can last a bit longer. A different kind of stress.

We already have one of the worst pensions in Europe, and it was always claimed that increases to the pension age were due to greater life expectancy, yet since the worst of Covid life expectancy has gone down. This exposes the lies. Would you want a 68 year old paramedic carrying you down stairs?

Ответ для timbothewiz

The fire service, nurses and police lost earlier retirement ages which made no sense taking into account t requirements of t work they do! Now people can be forced out of t job because they cannot maintain physical activity levels required of the job, which was the reason for the early retirement!

Ответ для Terry

A quick internet search suggests that police retirement age is 60, though they can retire at 55 with reduced benefits. Fire at 55. The ambulance service is deemed to be an essential service, not an emergency service, so they are expected to carry on until 68

Ответ для timbothewiz

Which again doesn’t take into account the nature of the work they undertake and the physical requirements of the job.

Ответ для Terry

Agreed

Ответ для timbothewiz

In fact police and firefighter normal retirement age is 60 though as you say they maybe able to retire earlier on reduced benefits. In both cases these are relatively recent changes that raised the age. Do you think a sixty year old firefighter will be able to carry someone from a burning building?

Ответ для Terry

The worst is the Prison Service where you’re expected to fight testosterone filled 18 year olds with daily gym access when you’re 67!

Ответ для timbothewiz

I've e got a feeling it was already heading downwards before covid hit, due to years of austerity.

Work harder Work longer Work cheaper Die quicker

68! What a country.

Unfortunately for governments: pensioners have the vote!!!

AND - we gave the worst pension in Europe,

Have you actually read the article you've linked there? Because if you have, I'd suggest you read it again & pay attention this time.

Makes me sick! Retirement age should be 60.

First they came for circa 4 million women born in the 1950's....

I found it quite comical on reading an article on pension age last week. Apparently, by the year 2050,the retirement age will be 70. If you believe that, then you'll believe there's a Santa Claus.

Ответ для Scotland

I believe it. At some stage there won’t actually be a pension.

This is a disgusting decision there should be ashamed of themselves and I hope it never makes it into policy

Cue the massive increas in people having to quit work & sign on as after forty years in physically demanding jobs their bodies cannot take it any more.

This is totally unacceptable. People have worked for decades towards a known retirement age to change it just a few years before people retire is not something ANY Govt should be able or willing to do!

Ответ для Terry

Poor get squeezed at every opportunity. Low wages Austerity Poorest 20% pay higher proportion of income in direct/indirect taxes than the richest 20% Denied healthcare, 8m hospital appointments awaited in the UK. Lack of social care Killed off or condemned to poverty by hiking state pension age.

The impact of long covid is going to make the future very challenging for some people, I doubt this is being factored in to decisions.

What is never accounted for is that people don't come out of a uniform mould. Some will not be able to work in their 50s. Some could go on more or less indefinitely. Assuming everybody can be fit to work till nearly 70 is unrealistic.

Ответ для William Brown 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

HMRC didn't collect £59bn of taxes last year. Billions lost through profit shifting. Billions lost to offshore shenanigans.

They average years of living in good health is 61. This constant nudging up of the retirement age is a policy for a different time. The whole system needs reform and some more imaginative thinking required. Perish the thought we'd ever get that from our political class.

Ответ для Ian Mackay

In rich Richmond-upon-Thames, males have Healthy Life Expectancy (HLE) of 69.3 years, females 70.3 years. In parts of Blackpool, male HLE is 50.9 years, females 51.2 years. Males in deprived areas in Scotland have HLE of 44.8 years, 44.2 years for females. State sponsored democide in our times.

Jeez, this is the website of a national newspaper, can they not afford a proofreader?

I'm just re reading "The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists" - little has changed. Alarming.

Actually, on reflection, when I first read it I thought "thank dog we have progressed from this" - now I'm thinking "my dog, we are back there again". And it's all down to education, education, education. We are not teaching our kids to question & analyse. It's frankly terrifying.

Ответ для 🇨🇵 Clare Price-Jones 🇪🇺

Me too! I'm having to put it down every couple of days as I find it so upsetting. Plus ca change indeed.

Ответ для 🇨🇵 Clare Price-Jones 🇪🇺

Me too! It could have been written this week. You’re absolutely correct little if anything has changed!

We should be lowering the age of official retirement and introducing #UBI so that it doesn't really matter when someone becomes officially retired, semi retired or not. The key is ending poverty so that people have choices and Gvt can manage resources on behalf of the people more fairly.

Ответ для Bruce Henderson

Yes! 👍🏻

Well said.

Well as a 1950s woman who had worked since 1973 and thought she could retire at 60 and was to find out at 58 that it would be 65 and then 66 spent years bringing up 3 kids and doing non pensionable p/t work while ex husband had full teachers pension I’m shocked …

We ought to be working a maximum of 20 hours a week and retiring around 50. We need to bring an end to consumerism, invest in leisure, welfare and health care. We need to reinstate and recognise the importance of parenthood for working class families. Our world is upside down

Do you know what else they’ve done? If you deferred claiming your pension, you used to get a lump sum with interest. Imagine my shock on learning you now only get a year as lump sum with the rest used to top up your weekly pension. It’s my money! They want us dead! This on top of the WASPI scandal.

Ответ для Avril Jones 📷

They kept that quiet

Assuming employers haven't pushed you out by that age. It's bad enough trying to get a job in my mid 50s. Age discrimination abounds.

Ответ для UnicornsRockUK

There are plenty of jobs that it is almost physically imposible to do at that age! Not everyone works in an office, though even office staff have reasons to want to get out earlier!

Ответ для Terry

I think they realised it's cheaper to pay someone universal credit each month for being unemployed than it is retirement. All while they as MPs enjoy gold plated pensions, or better still, put out to pasture in the Lords.

You wouldn’t think the UK has one of the worst pensions in Europe.

Ответ для julrose

We probably would 🤦🏻‍♀️

Ответ для julrose

We don’t have the worst. Sky did an analysis. The triple lock has helped lift it. But it’s still in the bottom half of the table compared to many countries. Irrespective of the pension rates, 68 is too late for men & women to have to work before reaching SPA, especially if they have physical jobs.

M

I’ve known 2 women personally who worked all their lives & died a few years before retirement age. One from ALS & the other from several issues including cancer. You don’t know what’s ahead & many people will die before official retirement age. It’s a cruel policy from the 6th richest country.

They are already making cuts...My partner retired in May this year, the previous year NI contributions to 5 April 2026 not included by HMRC so he gets less than a full pension....is this now policy to defraud millions of people each year?? Don't forget that year not credited is compounded.

The government works for the people, we don't want age 68 retirement, it's your job, go fix it, the population rejects your homework now go away and try harder to find the solution to the problem your peers helped create, the workers DEMAND it.

Now Burnhams in charge he better change it. Too many young can't get work and too many old can't. Let the old retire and the young replace, that's what the system is designed to do.

They want people to die before they claim pension. I'd they have to work more, pay more.

Billionaires are resources, we need to exploit them until they tap out dry! Rinse and repeat. All that stolen wealth is ours for the taking! We need to colonise their backwards states, teach them how to be better humans and use the resources they are wasting for our Benifit.

Ответ для chuffmeister

Any resemblance to global colonialism is entirely coincidental, no billionaires will be harmed in the enforcement of this education in civilisation. They will thank us! Our installed governors (rulers) for their business will of course be ethically trained.

Oh, this article is terribly framed. The state exists to support the population. Saying the state will 'save 6 billion' by screwing over people is ghastly. You pay what it costs to look after people, not turning round and saying 'nah, rich people need their third penthouse'.

Ответ для Simon 🪗

This is what annoys me, this disconnect. It's like we're all a nuisance, who should be grateful for scraps thrown. The term "Pension Credit" boils my piss, like you're being placed in hock, simply for what is necessary to live.

Ответ для LaReyne

They serve us, not the other way around. In theory, anyway ..

Ответ для Simon 🪗

They forget. Until they need our votes.

Ответ для Simon 🪗

And the extra defence money - makes me wonder what we’re defending anymore.

Weve all had plenty notice to pay into a workplace pension!

Ответ для Adam

Not everyone has the spare income petal.

Ответ для Skip Intro

In that case work til youre 68 and draw the state pension.

Ответ для Skip Intro

Not at all. Where is your counter argument apart from calling me a tory. PS Compared to the current labour and green administrations, id rather be a tory

Ответ для Adam

There are many needed professions where that would be very difficult to say the least (manual labour for instance). If someone at 62 can't do their jobs anymore who will take them on as a trainee at that age....and if they are able to find employment it will be impacting youth unemployment

Ответ для Kacey

Theres many professions that require manual labour at 62. But you know this, when you get into the "profession", so you should plan for it accordingly. If youre still a labourer on a building site at 62, then question your life choices. Being a better society should include personal responsibility

On a long enough timeline everyone will develop a disability, the probability increases the older you get, add a disability on top of age and employment isn't going to happen.

Ответ для Skip Intro

And thats where we should help. If its genuine.but not every 68 year old is an invalid who should be removed from the workforce sweety

My brother was a painter and decorator for the council, not seemingly the most strenuous job, but by his 60s he was clapped out. He was lucky covid came along a year before due to retire - furloughed on full pay till his retirement came. Think they did it because he'd done 50 yrs of good service.

Ответ для LaReyne

But he was lucky. I think another year would have killed him. Not in good health now at all and can't really enjoy his retirement.

Yeah except a lot of 60yr old, hard working - minimum wage, folk jist gettin by… ya fkn trumpet

Living to work is wrong, working hard all your life & retiring when you are too knackered mentally & physically is insane.

Ответ для socialistnan123

A personal view, I loved my job and always thought I'd work at least until I was 70. Sales work so not manually hard. However, one day at age 63 I realised I didn't want to work anymore. 6 months later I retired from work. Had some savings whilst awaiting state pension. I'm 77. Life is for living.

Ответ для tps2203

Good for you, sadly not everyone has that choice .

Ответ для socialistnan123

Exactly. We need to give everyone that choice. Because we're humans not machines. I support UBI philosophy for this very reason. We need governments which identify as humans - indeed we need exactly what govts give themselves in terms of salary, pensions, annual percentage increases and subsidies!

Ответ для tps2203

The problem with UBI is it is inflationary and non-productive. What people nee are guaranteed jobs with heavy regulation to create a 'work to live' environment. Providing the things we need, but not at expense of life and health. Capitalism won't play a large role.

Ответ для tps2203

Yes, that's the thing about aging. What you felt capable of earlier in life is not necessarily going to be possible later on.

Ответ для LaReyne

How true! 😂

Ответ для LaReyne

Exactly this.

Ответ для socialistnan123

People who make decisions have money and sit in offices. You try being a labourer of any kind at 68!

Ответ для Heather Peacock 🇵🇸

Yes. They are so far removed from reality, their decisions would soon change if they had to graft physically hard.

Ответ для socialistnan123

When I was twenty a 'boss' of mine, who was a decent fellow, was on the cusp of his retirement and retired a year later. Then another year later he was dead. Waiting until 'pension age'# to enjoy life is a mistake, you never when death will strike. Work is a hindrance for most people.

Ответ для Jacques Riverain

I agree. A close friend of mine lost her husband a month before he was due to retire.

Difficult to get a job once you're older than 60. But I guess they know that and rely on people cashing in other sources of income to survive.

Ответ для Ross Duncan

It can be difficult even past 40. Employers don't want older people, regardless of capability.

Treated like pit ponies from 100 years ago, worked hard all their lives only fit for the knackers yard when no longer useful.

As life expectancy stalls or even falls. 😡

Work till you drop

Ответ для alisoncitrine

The Trusster said that the pension age should be 80 (life expectancy for a man in the UK is currently 79)

Ответ для timbothewiz

Exactly !!!

I actually don't think the state pension as we know it will exist within the next 20yrs .

Derisory pension ever later. Successive governments both sides of the spectrum have failed to move to a ring fenced funded model along the lines of the Australian system preferring to keep running it from current taxation even though they have known for a couple of generations it would unravel.

Raising the retirement age won't help youth unemployment either.

Ответ для Skip Intro

Nobody is planning for the impact of AI. Young people can't find work at the moment, AI will make this worse.

Ответ для Nelly Probin

Two very good points.

Don’t know many people who can afford to retire now at 68 actually

Ответ для KarrieS

But good luck getting a sensible pay at that age!

Ответ для Terry

Tell me about it ! Already aware unfortunately

Heres my controversial view, get rid of the triple lock and lower the pension age. I think it is better people get a state pension earlier even if it means they get less. Atm the system is gamed by wealthier people b/c they live longer.
