#FilmHistory On this day, 1978 NATIONAL LAMPOON’S ANIMAL HOUSE was released. The fictitious Faber College was a stand-in for the University of Oregon. It was shot on a budget of $3M, but grossed $141.6M, and It was the highest grossing comedy of all time until the release of Ghostbusters (1984).

IIRC, the DVD had a BTS feature that claimed it was the first comedy that didn't have a silly score, with Elmer Bernstein using more dramatic music that pretty much set the norm for future comedies like Ghostbusters. The claim is kinda dubious IMO, but I feel it probably popularized the practice.

John Landis requested a crane for some of the shots during the parade sequence. He was initially denied, but when the studio saw the rushes, it was up there in two days. John was IN the movie, during the cafeteria sequence, as a nerdy food worker, but the scene ultimately did not work and was cut.
