Sometimes I feel like the last Shatner defender (I just try to be fair) but I think the curliness of the 80s might be from dyeing his hair. As hair grays it also dries out, giving colored hair an unnatural texture (see: Pray for the Wildcats and Horror at 37000 feet) and curls will help hide that.
