In reality, the Chinese Exclusion Act was the 1st major federal law to explicitly suspend immigration for a specific group of people. It banned Chinese immigration to the U.S. for decades and prevented hundreds of thousands of Chinese Americans from exercising their right to become U.S. citizens.
