🚨NEW PAPER🚨 out now in TREE @cp-trendsecolevo.bsky.social "Constraint and convergence in the evolution of vertebrate sound production". Thanks to Christian Herbst, Coen Elemans, and @tecumsehfitch.bsky.social for a great collaboration. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

We show how muscle-driven sound production mechanisms (e.g., those found in fish and arthropods), are limited by muscle contraction speeds, which restrict signal frequency and radiation efficiency.

Airflow-driven mechanisms, particularly those using myoelastic aerodynamic (MEAD) principles, overcome these constraints to enable efficient, high-frequency sound production.

MEAD has evolved convergently across several different clades of tetrapods, including basal mammals, toothed whales, and birds, supporting complex and long-range acoustic communication.
