This piece was such a fun challenge. The shading is done in layered ink washes/watercolor. The moody red background was actually a mix of way brighter pinks & oranges. I rendered all of it knowing that I'd heighten the contrast with a backlit scan, I had no idea if it would turn out how I imagined.
