Are mildly poetic turns of phrase to set a tone 'magic realism' now? It seems obvious, even in the context of this excerpt, that the phrase isn't meant to be taken literally. I've an almost counter-productive capacity for understanding how people come to wildly different ideals/beliefs to me...
