One of the most astonishing behaviors exhibited by whales is the upright sleeping posture of sperm whales (*Physeter macrocephalus*): they stand vertically in the water in groups—resembling candles—to rest for 10 to 15 minutes. It is a majestic sight.

Wu whale chi!!

That is magical! 💙💙💙

"Me so sleepy!" "Me too!" "Shush I'm trying to sleep!" "Oh. sorry!"

It would be the greatest album cover ever. 🤘🏻💙

Rapture is coming at they go straight to the pearly gates while humanity goes down the shitter because we have destroyed everything and let a wilted orange ruin the world

Great shot

Nature rarely fails to take your breath away.

Wow🤩

They must have superpowers. If you’re a SCUBA diver and have ever hung vertical in the water column at 50 feet deep for let’s say 10 minutes, it takes constant awake diligence to stay neutrally buoyant. How do they do that when they’re asleep without rocketing to the surface while dreaming?

Probably by altering the amount of air in their lungs. I would be terrified if I was diving into their circle accidentally.

I hope you’re not pulling my leg, Petra

“I’m a seed-sized intelligence passing through the planet … I send other seeds that sense, that environment, their being.” Thank you for being that seed. 🙏🏽

🥰

I suppose they saturate their brain with oxygen thus leading to vertical buoyancy. They can thus sleep longer. My 2 cents.

Spermaceti is a waxy liquid in their heads that gives it buoyancy. Then they suck in cold water to make it dense so they can dive to the Midnight Zone and grab giant squid. 🦑 I don’t know why I watched a YT video last night about them. But I did.

Sperm whales earned their name during the 18th century when whalers noticed milky white fluids inside the whales’ heads. The fluid which occupies up to a third of a whale’s head space regulates buoyancy. As a whale dives down, the waxy oil cools and becomes denser, acting as a natural weight belt.

As the whale surfaces, the waxy oil warms, expands, and gives it a lift. The volume of air in their lungs also expands as they surface, adding to the lift. i didn't know. nautil.us/how-do-sperm...

So beautiful

It’s like they are praying.
