You might recall that ZeniMax Online Studios unionized in 2024. At the time, the CWA explained the majority of union members were based in Maryland.

ZeniMax Online Studios was also the target of layoffs in July 2025, when Microsoft chose to cancel an in-development MMO codenamed 'Project Blackbird' that purportedly blew former Xbox boss Phil Spencer away (thanks, Bloomberg). The studio and its workforce cannot catch a break under Microsoft.

Have pinged MS for more details. Hopefully I'll have heard back by the time I clock in tomorrow morning.

Do we know why ZOS was hit this hard? Were they underperforming? To cut away management layers? Braff said something about working more closely across the organization. Shouldn't ESO be a focus when the plan is to strengthen Elder Scrolls?

200+ layoffs isn't cutting away management layers, it's a bloodbath.

Honestly my guess is union busting. Given ID also was Union.

Don't believe their story they are selling about layers. They gutted entire departments without any comprehension of what the positions actually did.

That's clearly Activision-Blizzard side behind closed doors influencing layoffs in Zenimax. To cut out competition internally with WoW.
