I'm pleased to share a preprint today, paper 2/3 of a trilogy (you'll have to wait for the Return of the Jedi). In 2021-22, lots of countries saw unprecedented transmission of enteric adenovirus F41 in children. There were lots of hypotheses about what caused this. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Viral Diversity Influences T Cell Responses to Enteric Human Adenoviruses F40 and F41Background Human enteric species F adenoviruses are a leading cause of diarrhoea-associated paediatric morbidity and mortality worldwide. The cellular immune response (antigen-specific cytotoxic T cel...www.biorxiv.org

Data from lots of groups, including mine, looked at one hypothesis: was there a new strain of F41 circulating? Not really - the most severe cases of enteric adenovirus were scattered among strains present in the UK pre and post 2020. www.microbiologyresearch.org/content/jour...

A second hypothesis - could F41 have acquired increased immune evasiveness over time? This preprint looks at the T cell aspect of this. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... With colleagues in Kenya, we looked at how epitopes have changed since F41 was first isolated in the 1970s (in Holland).
