sounds like the teachers union got together with the police union

Yep, bad employees over student welfare. Just what an education system should be about... The Teachers Union. I am pro union, BUT - only when they protect good employees, not throw good employees under the bus to protect the worst, and support teachers over ACTUAL education.

The union did suggest a way to fix it to get their support. That suggestion was ignored. Not sure why.

Great! We have identified the problem, the unions and the teachers agency. Now how do we get duly elected officials to do their job in fixing this problem, with or without them.

I'm a teacher and am all for keeping bad teachers out of public ed classrooms and admin. A principal at one school where I worked was arrested for child porn and walked off campus. Definitely had creepster vibes.

Yeah, the problem seems to be that this particular effort wasn't specifically targeted enough to make sure that only the actually bad teachers are swept up.

Make lobbying illegal. The only lobbyists an elected legislature should be listening to is the people they represent. Full stop

I question whether the legislator who introduced the bill actually wanted it to pass. He waited until the last minute to introduce it, and then instead of making changes to address concerns he amended it in a way that lost the support of the only group who was sponsoring it.

I know a man that was such a bad teacher that they just paid him to stay at home because the union protected him.

I quite often thank the heavens for the "retired" before "teacher" in my bio. Vetting, merit advancements, mentor/apprentice programs...hell I don't EVEN need to think about that stuff unions fck up much less worry. Folks still on the front lines better get their shit together though. ✌️
