The Hitchhiker's guide text game was similar, but came out a few years after the game that inspired Mesquite's adventure game.

Monochrome monitors, 300-baud acoustic coupler modems, DECsystem-10, EDLIN, SOS/RUNOFF. In addition to _Adventure_ (it had a lethal “book of exploding runes,” did it not?), I remember playing a game called _netTrek._ Maybe there are some things about the late 1970s that are nostalgia-worthy… Naw.

Of the very early games, I've only played Zork, in which I didn't encounter any exploding runes, but my memory may have been eaten by a grue.

In this (early?) version of ZoL, there is nothing dangerous, but if we were to add a mysterious monster, it's name would have to a something like "grepha". (At least, I assume that "grue" is from "GReat Underground Empire"...?)

I don’t know which came first. I was told that Grue was a play on grusome, and that the GUE came later, but I’m no expert.
