I would REALLY love to know what's the actual deal with gamefreak and pokemon games' declining quality, because I don't think "greedy and lazy" is the answer, at least not the full one. My guess would be "cataclysmic levels of technological debt" combined with "insane release schedule from Nintendo"

it's actually so much more annoying than that😭 like the series would be so much easier to drop if the quality was JUST declining, but it's like, with each game lately they'll make one thing majorly worse than in a previous one, but they'll also do a major breakthrough improvement to some other thing

yeah, it is clear that they can make a good game, the bones and the fun is there, but every time they are held back by *something* and I would love to know what the issue is. Like ZA is not a BAD game, but for that pricetag it should be better, bigger and prettier than Arceus and it just. isnt.

Have you seen the budget leaks? While devs have lots of good ideas they have to make these games as fast and cheap as humanly possible and I think that's all we need to know. I'd bet their processes is probably awfuly inefficient as well because that's the case for most large corporate entities.

yeah it was already pretty clear even before the leaks i think that alq's original diagnosis is spot on, but if all of that is true that confirms it

At this point this trend is fairly noticable across Nintendo as a whole, but they treat their in-house devs with a bit more decency - because when a Pokemon game is poor quality, it’s "Game Freak bad", but if it were a Mario game, it would be "Nintendo bad".

I have and that's what I suspect as well, and I know firsthand how much mess you can make while rushing development and how hard is to get out of it. I'm just deeply curious about the details, cause the "progress" from one game to another makes no sense, even considering what we know.

Like, how do you still struggle with optimization and tech that has been fairly standard and known in the industry?? Do you not hire new people? Is there no learning happening internally? It has to be DEEPLY fucked on several levels and I am just curious!

The progress was a bit all over the place even during the good DS era, probably the result of different teams working on different projects simultaneously and rarely sharing notes.
