If I recall correctly, yew wood was the key to the creation of the English longbow, which was a technological advance over other designs.

Over 60 years ago it was my playground - we walked from Chichester and collected spent cartridges (some possibly live) left over from its use for military exercises - rarely met a soul - otherworldly

One of my most favourite places, very precious. Interesting small onsite facility with natural and human history too.
