Yeah, as much as it's fun to look back on these comments aging like milk, people did have a point about platformers being extremely saturated and this being a massive gamble That said, some of these comments are just outright spiteful lmao

To be fair, what genre other than RTS and Point and Click AREN'T saturated? :P

first person party based open world dungeon crawlers ala might and magic but not wizardry

Ответ для Fewer Than Jake 🇵🇸🏴

Yeah, I was gonna mention Legend of Grimrock and then I remembered even the sequel is several years old at this point.

Ответ для St1ka

legend of grimrock is dungeon master style, I'm talkin like huge open world like world of xeen lol

Ответ для Fewer Than Jake 🇵🇸🏴

OH! Yeah, there's really nothing quite like that in the indie space right now

tower defense

Ответ для Charbles McBerkely

Not saturated, but absolutely hard to break into, given how attached most fans of the genre are to the Big Two

Ответ для Emily Dioptase (it/she)

what are the big two? i'm not really up to speed. is the bonus td game/map that came with warcraft3 one of them?

Ответ для Charbles McBerkely

I was mainly referring to PvZ and BTD, in current times at least.

Give me mech combat RTT. I want a mech commander reboot QQ

Space combat sims. That little Star Wars one they did a couple years ago was cheap and awesome. All the big ones that are similar are about exploration and trade persistent worlds and all. I just want another wing commander, spare me the legwork.

*violent sobbing that only a Command & Conquer fan can muster*

We need more rhythm games.

So what I hear you saying is that I should quit my very stable job to make a 90s style point and click adventure game? Well, if you say so!

haha

Unironically yes.

Time to put talking people out of suicide on the shelf. Here comes an unauthorized Quest for Glory sequel!

tbh, going through platform brawlers that are using a cast they don't have legal access to (DBZ, Naruto, Bleach, Sonic, etc.) leaves the genre a bit limited and usually when trying to make a list we're still counting on our fingers level of small (not omitting RoA2 since they have their own cast).

Yea, we need more classic RTS games honestly, base builder style ones too, not just grand scale RTS like Civ.

I wanna see point and click again. Where are the HE-style games of today?

Ответ для Woynich🔜Megaplex

What's HE, in this context?

Ответ для nickbell 🆗️

Humongous Entertainment. They were a Washington-Based kids edutainment computer game company that existed from 1992 to 2013. They were responsible for a lot of games I loved in my childhood, and cartoon characters like Spy Fox, Freddi Fish, Pajama Sam and Putt-Putt.

Ответ для Woynich🔜Megaplex

These games were pretty different from the Jump-Start or Reader Rabbit or Math Blaster games of the time. Most of those games were effectively a series of minigames you'd be let loose to play around in from a menu hub until you reach the completion cutscene once you'd done them all X number of times

Ответ для Woynich🔜Megaplex

The HE Games by contrast were full-on interactive cartoons, with frames populated by click points that hid so much animation for a kid to just click around on and discover.

Ответ для Woynich🔜Megaplex

The HE Games themselves were really big on the literacy of point-and-click adventures, having the kid manage an inventory of items that functioned as locks to different keys spread all throughout the game world, and get the player to think about where to apply each key they found to what problem.

Ответ для Woynich🔜Megaplex

Usually with a fun mystery or grander objective guiding the main character to the end of these sprawling escape-rooms. Escape rooms that would also often have multiple solutions, and would even randomize the placement of the keys each playthrough.

Ответ для Woynich🔜Megaplex

And while I'm gushing about HE Games I might as well also praise the Humor, the voice acting, the music, and the art direction for a lot of these backgrounds:

Vehicle Combat Rail Shooter 4X Those games that were just one long Quick Time Event

I think the criticism is more that in conjunction with quitting your job

Whatever Outer Wilds was.

Ответ для Adeon K. Writer

I will never understand people's love for it (I couldn't grasp the movement system)

Ответ для Sasha

I mean, I think the criticism is legitimate, but that takes like 10 minutes to get used to. Panning one of the best games ever created because of a very minor thing is so weird

Ответ для Paycho

No, it takes significantly more effort. I haven't been able to make it work at all.

Ответ для Sasha

It's really not that complicated. On planets, it's like any other 3d platformer. For anything in between, autopilot works if you can't get a hang of orbits

Ответ для NerdyFiona

I don't think I ever played a 3d platformer. Especially in first person, which severely limits your ability to understand your position in space.

Ответ для Sasha

Your original post sounds more like "I think it's bad, and don't understand why people think it's good", but at this point it sounds like it's actually "I'm not comfortable with a controller and don't have an informed opinion".

Ответ для Paycho

My original post is about the game having two separate aspects, one of which you encounter first (movement system), and the other everyone praises. I said exactly what I meant. And I haven't had a controller at the time. Why would I?

Ответ для Sasha

I'm telling you how your post comes off, not arguing that you said something other than what you meant. I'm not asserting you had a controller, I'm comparing what you said to something similar. Reading is hard.

Ответ для Paycho

It is not similar. My opinion adds something to the conversation - it explains why someone might have a completely separate experience with the same game. Your example is mockery. And you can always go fuck yourself.

Ответ для Adeon K. Writer

it was incredible is what

Ответ для TLAO777

Incredible games are never saturated

Ответ для Mike Murphy-Burton

yeah this is what i was thinking, maybe the market just has alot of meh games, but i can't judge because i haven't tried the other games

Ответ для Zeebuoy (didn't have energy to split accounts sorry)

I've called them "Riddle" games since they're like puzzles but it's less about "Solve this thing you know the rules" and more "Okay explore and figure out what everything means" Other games in that Genre are Myst and Riven. (The new remakes are FPS like Outer Wilds)

Ответ для Das Ganon

I also recommend Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, Blue Prince, and Tunic

Ответ для OnlySmiles

Void stranger as well maybe?

Ответ для afancydragon

The Witness, Animal Well, Rain World

Ответ для Zeebuoy (didn't have energy to split accounts sorry)

I've heard "metroidbrainia" tossed around and kinda like it! I'm also prone to call 'em Mystlikes :3

Ответ для Adeon K. Writer

I love that game so much. It is truly special.

Ответ для Adeon K. Writer

unfortunately i think that is the first and only Outer-wilds-type game. also strand-type games aren't oversaturated yet

It depends. With the near infinite potential that games as a medium represent we've probably seen less than 1% of all possible genres we could have. We need to bring back getting-real-weird-with-it in general.
