Yes omg Also I grew up there too!

(bless you for your maraschino reference, you lovely elder god you)

Wait. You’re from Salem? Been in Portland for 35 years now, and where Portland flies its “Keep Portland Weird” banners, Salem flies its “Keep Salem Normal” banners. Well done on surviving it!

Oh, a fellow Salemite. I take it you got out too?

I see a lot of comments saying “Well, it’s Oregon,” and to be clear, Salem is NOT like Portland. Salem is basically the place in the city builder where you put the prisons and the bad mental hospitals and the mushroom plant so you can keep the happiness hit far away from the rest of the population.

…damn, when the wind changed and you got a lungful of the mushroom plant, that was SOMETHING.

“Why do you talk so much shit about Salem as an Oregonian?” I don’t, I just accurately describe it. Eugene I talk shit about-

Portland isn't like Oregon. Oregon is a flat, dry, inhospitable region marked "Here be Nazis and Dragons" on all the maps. Portland is very wet and lacks Dragonsm

Mushroom ... plant?

Also, when people say shit like, "Well, it's Oregon", I like to point out that Oregon was literally founded as a "White's only state" via its constitution and a ton of black exclusion laws. It's "bastion of progressiveness" label is recent and still needs work outside the cities, much like WA.

The brutalist library, though!!

Yeah, this is WILD to see as an Oregonian (my entire adult life so far, and I'm past the half-century mark). The red/blue divide is often drawn between "rural" and "urban" Oregon and that's *not untrue*, but then there's Salem which is some weird third thing entirely ("dumpster fire" arguably).

Ive been in pnw awhile and rarely think of salem and more rarely visit, When i do I wonder "why is this place" cuz its so large and it never seems like anyone goes there or comes from there. now i know.

Friend is a volunteer with the Humane Society there. He's done a lot of running animals up to Portland for test that they hope to be doing locally soon.

Yeah I’ve had to point out that Salem is not exactly a liberal bastion, which gives me a ton of hope (also everybody saw what happened to The Dalles)

I missed the mushroom plant when I lived there doing Legislative internships. But then the big thing was sunchokes.

Is this why it inspired Ursula LeGuin to write 'The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas'? (and I still can't believe someone thought Omelas was the perfect name for an AI company) www.omelas.io#1

Best roads in the state, though, courtesy of being the capitol. I swear they re-pave every other year, leaving the pot holes in the rest of the state to swallow ever more cows and mid-size sedans...

It’s actually gotten marginally less upsetting to spend time in in the last decade or so but it is still definitely not Portland.

ugh Salem acting like this really does seems likes it’s a perfect Glonzo. Salem is so stupid and racist; we think they’re somehow being “good” on this subject????

Hello from Amity, Oregon... just up the road from what now appears to be the site of the second French revolution

Guillotines use a lot less water. Very environmentally consc.

I accidentally read this as "Salem *bought* a guillotine to oppose new data center" and was like, damn, that's an unusually proactive city council...!

Ответ для Toby

As did I!

This is wonderful, but the headline should have been “Data Center CEO sees guillotine at council meeting, leaves chop chop.”

I feel like giggling is mean, yet I still might.

Oh cool, I briefly lived in Kaiser.

Wait, you're from Salem? (Springtuckyian here)

Oregon is my home, even though I moved to California. Lived in Jackson county for nearly 40 years so I know how red it can get. That said, when the parts that aren't Portland, Ashland or maybe Eugene get fed up with stuff like that, to that degree, it says A LOT. I'm damn proud of you Salem.

This is impressive.

Wait, you’re from Salem? I grew up a little up highway 22 from there. Exciting!

Ответ для content to be slightly forlorn

We moved a LOT but Salem got the majority of my time.

Read it & homigod, it’s not a metaphor!

I mean, they should feel unsafe. Bringing a guillotine is a pretty clear threat.

Like a boss

i had no idea you were one of the ones who walked away from omelas!
