Bluesky does seem to have a weirdly high percentage of avowed leftists who generically hate on “liberals.”

I think this question is still about the algorithm. If other sites routinely hide leftists, BlueSky will seem particularly left leaning just by not censoring leftists. Anti-capitalism and liberalism are fundamentally at odds. I don't know why this seems to surprise everyone.

This is the definition of "liberalism' that I use. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberal... People act like the Left's problem with the center is unwarranted, inchoate hatred, despite serious differences in philosophy. Liberal Democrats are too focused on protecting private property and individual rights.

That same article identifies — correctly I would say — American liberalism as mostly social liberalism and therefore a center left position, which also seems accurate. That sounds like “adjacent” not “fundamentally at odds”

Liberalism is the ideology of capitalism. Take Elizabeth Warren, who I greatly respect. I think she sincerely loves the country but she wants to arrange the deck chairs on the Titanic. The CFPB was defanged immediately, as we'd expect capitalism to destroy any protection from capitalism.

After Trump's first term, Biden and the liberal Democrats squandered and suppressed the energy on the left to defend capitalism. We're "adjacent" in that a lot of what Democrats do is not fundamentally abhorrent. But the crimes of the United States and its allies continue unabated under liberals.

LOL at this meme. So pertinent. That’s why many who hate capitalism shy away from ’real’ left. There are so few genuine leftist. Genuine leftists tend to think they already know exactly how we must do everything. All I know is capitalism doesn’t work—that’s why I balk and call myself a liberal.

There are a lot of anarchists and communists who I respect. I see more people who can support their ideologies with facts, history, and coherent logic when listening to smart Leftists than anywhere else. I don't really know what a ChapoTrapHouse is, but I ignore large swathes of Internet Leftists.

I try to avoid semantic arguments, but I honestly think the way so many people use "liberal" to mean different things makes it difficult to discuss a major inflection point of American politics. I say leftism begins at anti-capitalism. If we agree on that, we're comrades.

This is how I prefer to think as well. One problem for me is I‘m pretty old. So I remember the ‘real left’ and know why I don’t call myself a leftist since a) we lost the revolutions we needed in the 80s and b) I would never trust people in the USA who were ‘the real left’ to do anything, really.

I, too, am old, and a big reason I don’t call myself a leftist is because I grew up in the 1980s seeing that the two big “leftist” states of China and the USSR were not exactly shining examples.

I have always been strongly opposed to American ANTI-communism — basically a neverending moral panic used to quash leftish reforms — but it also seemed like traditional communism can’t be the answer.

I'm 46 and not terribly impressed by either of your protestations of advanced age. "Leftism is for children" is a thought terminating cliche not worthy of discussion. McJulie, do you know anything about China or the USSR that didn't come from western media? We are awash in capitalist propaganda.

So capitalism as we know it MUST end. I don’t believe we know how to do it or what we should do next. We should oppose the harms it is doing and I know for sure the people causing these depredations are as useless as kings. My faith is in human beings. My hope is we save ourselves.
