Everyone raves about Gene Wolfe's THE BOOK OF THE NEW SUN, but I suspect there's a conspiracy afoot. I'm halfway through the third book, and I've never seen ANY author -- except maybe Steven Erikson -- so determined to avoid telling you what the hell exactly is going on.
