Genus Wisteria includes four species: Japanese, Chinese, American & Silky wisteria. But the name is distinctly American. My fellow biologists will know the Wistar Institute & Wistar rats. Wisteria is named in honor of American physician & anatomist Caspar Wistar (1761–1818).
