Unfortunately, I feel like we are getting closer and closer to violent confrontation between state and federal law enforcement, or law enforcement from red and blue states.

The right’s authoritarianism is highly unpopular with the general public, and they know it I suspect they’re only going to be present where local law enforcement is sympathetic with the right wing, such as occurred with the LAPD

77 million MAGA voters disagree

Just because someone voted for Trump doesn’t mean that everything Trump subsequently does is popular with them His current approval rating is net -20, in an electorate that’s virtually 50/50, you can’t get that low unless you’ve pissed off a good share of your own voters

Fair point, but now republicans are in power and judging by how they are behaving with no serious and effective opposition. I think voters are going to find that getting them out of office is nigh on impossible unless its at gunpoint, tragically. I wish you well, but glad I`m over the pond.

What law enforcement isn’t sympathetic to the right wing?

It's not that, it's more that the right wing/LE isn't monolithic. Which doesn't make any of them "good guys" but the infighting can be useful. at one point during the height of the bullshit here in LA two factions of LA & environs popo ended up firing (rubber bullets) at each other.

Even the LAPD aren't fans, overall. It's not really that they're in sync so much as LAPD has long been and still is capable of being a murderous police state all on their ownsomes. I grant you the distinction doesn't seem that important in practice. at least in theory you can ask for their badge.

Oh I’m well aware, but certain places like Chicago give the vibe that they’re not interested in ceding sovereignty

I'd genuinely love to be wrong but that kind of classical conservatism is long dead Cops -> proud boys -> ICE pipeline I guess we'll see how loyal they are to the government that pays them, I may be able to count on that at least 🤷🏻

It's not really about classical conservatism, it's more about defending their own turf. But yeah, we'll see. Like here, we got the head of the LAPD denouncing ICE and the NG's incursion "we got this" but on the ground, sure, happy pics together.

Meanwhile iirc Pritzker could in theory get the jump on Trump and call out the NG himself; evidently it's a dibsies thing? So sayeth Josh Marshall, a while back, I think; but don't take my word for it.

NG at at least were miserable and bored out of their box being on call all that time. Many were hometown boys and girls, and/or Latino/a. And unlike ICE, they didn't get hotel rooms or even payment (for the first 30 days) TrumpCo aren't exactly great at building morale.

There is usually quite a huge gap between the heads who have a direct political master and much of the police force when it comes to large police departments. In smaller departments, things can be more chummy and even perhaps more corrupt.

Yeh. In other news I just saw that apparently Indiana police are collaborating with ICE over a detention center there, going by Speed...something, very cutesy movie sounding. Whee.

The police in the US have a long history of biting the hand which feeds them and getting away with it with zero accountability. And don’t underestimate the interest of little boys wanting to hang with the big boys and thus doing the big boys’ bidding.

Conservative has never been anything but code for bigot

Pritzker's resolve notwithstanding, have you met the Chicago Police?

Ответ для Patricius Bikinius, Magister Edictum

Yep even the DC police, in the Institute of Peace case, the judge essentially surrendered saying "it would lead to an armed confrontation" (and, defacto, that there was no one armed that would enforce her ruling).

This is just one big "the emperor has no clothes" situation and the emperor in question is the entire judicial situation as a whole, and the implications of what next steps are necessary after we all agree that the current system is completely impotent.

Ответ для Patricius Bikinius, Magister Edictum

Key thing is to give the judiciary an armed enforcement wing under their control. This whole speed run to fascism would've ground to a halt if one judge had been able to say "bring them in on contempt....no matter the cost". That has problems of it's own, but it's an improvement over this

Also notable: early evidence suggests the ICE recruiting pitch is mostly working on existing police. That's scary in many ways, but it does mean they may recruit away the worst of the local police, allowing for marginal reform there.
