Honestly still laughing at this. For YEARS people have told me the killer app, no doubt way that OpenAI would fix its business model would be ads, and it turns out it’s not going to make enough money to pay for a single month of inference spend. Great stuff Sammy! Big applause for the big man

"Emarketer’s data finds that standalone chatbots like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot app, Google AI Mode, and Amazon Alexa for Shopping (formerly Rufus) in U.S, will generate less than $1 billion in ad revenue this year, and just $5.41 billion by 2030" Lol www.adweek.com/media/openai...

Are the ads gonna be on the side or product placements in the chatbot's answers?

Whichever is stupider.

chatgpt doesn’t always display ads, but whenever it chooses to do so, they’re tiny little boxes at the end of the answer. I feel like it’s only a matter of time before they accept money to insert ads into relevant answers. Might be bigger money since that’s super targeted, but who knows

I don’t understand the business logic behind all of these investments in LLMs if the revenues are supposed come from ads. Are they expecting to attract more ad spending than is already flowing into the tech sector?

If not, then won’t this just make the big tech companies less profitable to pay for all of the capex they’re having to invest (and then re-invest every 5 years as the chips depreciate)?

At this point they cannot stop, and are hoping the horse learns to sing.

Having to hit 1 billion dollars to make your money back is just... stupid.

VCs & the companies they back have always just lied and pursued regulatory capture & monopoly protection. It's religion; money is just staying alive. IPOs are health packs for them, not outcome. They're forcing their preferred future on everyone and don't care what humanity loses along the way.

There's a finite amount of ad spend in the world. The rise of online advertising cut the legs out from network television, radio, magazines, newspapers, junk mail, even comic books were full of ads. Google and Facebook are not going to fund something that directly competes with their core business.

I work for a hardware store, and the national co-op brand we're part of made ~$9 billion in revenue in 2022. These guys are fucking cooked.

I wouldn't be surprised if one of them committed sudoku. Shameful display.

Maybe it is the killer app... just not in the way they thought.

Fastest POSER FALL of all-time. Beats Worldcom, Enron, FTX

Can the bubble pop now?

The ad revenue might be even less in practice, given ad blockers will catchup for the web interfaces for sure, and for Electron apps, will be some other alternatives to cleanup the traffic

It’s also funny that eventually, even the most “world changing” tech companies are forced into the same business model that Ben Franklin used in the 1750s.

Hitting 5% of forecast ad revenue would be both 1) pathetic and 2) very funny.

Right before AI, they were killing off all the voice assistants (especially Alexa) because they didn't make any money. So these new chatbots that cost more to run were going to be magically profitable?

This is somehow how I found out that one of Google's product is actually called Google AI Mode and not Gemini. That whole company is so beyond parody. Absolutely nothing customer-facing that they can't make confusing as shit.

"We asked our AI to come up with ten good names for our AI, and then we said fuck it and used all of them. Please sign up for the beta of Google Play Chatbot All Access, which has been canceled."

I sure wish they'd abandon it like they do all the cool projects. RIP Google Earth Pro, Jamboard, Podcasts, Chromecast Audio, Cloud Print, Google+, and especially Picasa.
