And Justice Sotomayor goes there in her Al Otro Lado dissent (where SCOTUS allows the Trump admin to nullify asylum guarantees if they stop people at/outside the border): "The current asylum system developed in response to the international moral reckoning that followed the Holocaust...."

Cuba did let some disembark & live in Cuba but the rest tried other ports who denied them entry, then to the Nazis for extermination. Descendants of the survivors periodically express gratitude even to the current Cuban government & people. Of course the CIA created the need for these asylum seekers

Next time she should talk about discrimination against Catholics. That example might resonate more with this court.

"...One infamous incident, the voyage of the M. S. St. Louis, is emblematic. In 1939, over 900 Jewish refugees attempted to flee persecution in Nazi Germany by setting sail aboard the M. S. St. Louis...." www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25p...

More from Justice Sotomayor's dissent: "The consequences of today’s decision are predictable. More people will die. More people will attempt to cross the border illegally, and some will make it while others will not."

"..... More people will turn back and be subjected to violence because of something they cannot or should not have to change about themselves, such as their race, religion, nationality, or political opinion."

Trump is fundamentally changing our culture of inclusion. We are an immigrant nation!

I'm starting to think that our own 1789 might be necessary to completely end racism in America.

How can SCOTUS not see that Trump is denying asylum to everyone but WHITE RACIST South Africans?

It was called the final solution because the Nazis couldn’t deport all the Jews

It's time to either pack or abolish the Supreme Court. They've deemed themselves kings of kings.

Hey, not everyone can qualify for an Einstein visa!

Doesn't this interpretation logically mean every border patrol officer blocking the path of these immigrants is technically standing in another country, and therefore, like, an invading army?

The refugee program has been closed to everyone except White South Africans. Racist and deplorable.

The story of the M. S. St. Louis is a haunting reminder of the devastating consequences of closed borders and xenophobia, a dark chapter in history that still resonates today.

Unless you're a supreme court justice.

Good for her. But this is awful; “never again” is happening again. 💔

The SCOTUS six would def send Jews back to the camps. Alito would do it gleefully.

I have yet to hear a credible reason why expanding and reforming the Supreme Court should not be a litmus test for any Democrat running for federal office.

It'll never happen, but I wish, just once, Sotomayor (or one of the other of the 3) would say in a dissent "...and the Nazi majority justices can go fuck themselves." I'm impressed she even keeps trying. I'd have given up. It must be depressing to know each case has already been decided.

Many MAGA voters would be tremendously pleased if they could send any amount of minorities or foreigners to death camps. How powerful would they view themselves.

And she’s 100% right. That was a shameful thing to do that we should regret as a country.

When I see decisions like Al Otro Lado, or Callais, or US v. Trump, and so many others, and I then see the Justices going on about collegiality and the horseshit about how they like having lunch together, I’m dumbstruck. I wouldn’t enter the same fucking room as Samuel Alito, much less eat with him.

Well six of the "Justices" ARE Nazis. I'm glad an actual Justice is willing to say so out loud.

Did she reference that in her oral dissent?

I’m so glad she referenced the M.S. St. Louis! It’s one of the most overlooked aspects of the U.S. State Department’s hostile posture towards Jewish refugees during WWII. There’s a photo of a truly stunning memo in my book where then Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morganthau confronts FDR about it.

The Supreme Court has become the most dangerous institution in the country
