Godot taking the lead at GMTK after so many years is amazing and shows how great it is to have an open-source engine whose maintainers and leaders are aligned with their community. I'm really happy to see this happen! Unity's decline was entirely self-inflicted due to poor leadership and decisions.

Well, it finally happened! After 9 years of Unity dominance, Godot was the most used game engine for GMTK Game Jam 2026 submissions. 🤖 Godot - 47% 🎮 Unity - 34% 🛠️GameMaker - 5% 🚀 Unreal Engine - 3% ✨ Other - 11%

There are many teams still using Unity for their projects (ourselves included), and I hope Unity 7 is a step in the right direction. They'll never be able to regain their trust, but I hope they can at least stabilise it for the developers still using it. I'm glad Godot is keeping the pressure on.

Unity filled a niche that clearly needed to be filled, but also.. had well discussed issues Godot is taking a well deserved step into the same space. Theyre pragmatic & open. Its really nice to see it get recognition One thing I liked from Unity was that it has space for folks to sell plugins

The runtime fee was the final nail in the coffin, but Unity had already been messy to work with for years up until that point. Multiple rendering pipelines, UI systems, unfinished packages, etc. Games are already fiddly projects. Working on a foundation that's complicated by design just felt awful.

We have been waiting for Godot.
