There's a really good radio production from the BBC that is just floating around on the internet these days. I listened to that in intermediate school. Hobbit is a kids book but LOTR is a little older.

oh yeah i mean there's obviously violence and tense sad themes but it's such advanced language it'll go over kids heads until they're ready for it

Our kids’ preschool used to read The Hobbit to them every spring. They would build LakeTown in the sandbox
