Was going to say exactly the same: Springsteen is a great example of this, lots of people like the music but seem never to have really thought about the lyrics of some of his less well known songs, like, hmm, Born in the USA or The Ghost of Tom Joad.

Boy, Ghost of Tom Joad seems hard to misunderstand but... If Rage Against the Machine is singing it (I like their cover version), maybe it's not as conservative as you (generic you) think?

I get movie-like pictures in my head for some songs because of how/when I heard them first (Comfortably Numb/Run Like Hell) so I can see that what you feel when you hear music may not relate well to its actual language and meaning. I just don't assume the way I respond is general (with reason).
