One of the most annoying aspects about my side...(side side? I don't know which side hustle is my main side hustle) job is telling small business owners that it's all nice and well that you feel your product is worth a certain value. It means nothing if nobody else does.

I very much understand the annoyance with the Boomer/GenX "pay you in exposure" nonsense, but I feel that sometimes, the swing has gone the other way where small businesses and artists feel that they deserve to get paid for their time (valid) but also people are obligated to shop with them (invalid)

Ultimately if you're selling a product that is one or more of the following: a) non-essential b) premium price c) has cheap alternatives d) has no sustainable demand Your business will be volatile. Esp in hard economic times, you have to give discounts or cut corners But you're not owed patronage.

And even a lot of leftish people do the fuck ass libertarian thing where they feel like just having a dream and opening a business means you should be guaranteed success, thus any amount of government intervention or taxation is a crime against humanity. No. The petit bourgeoisie is owed nothing.
