On the topic of Sen. I used to think (when I was much younger) that he was more of a "philosopher economist," "more sociologist than economist" (whatever that means). But then I encountered this, and learnt he made many original contributions to social choice, and was a v good mathematical writer.

I would agree but I think that's a strength, not a weakness. To me, it means he understands the value of tools, but he also knows their proper place. Economics is a tool, not a goal itself

Oh absolutely. I am not casting that as strength or weakness. Only expressing how I internally classified him based on the public persona quite far back in time. Because of that, noticing that he had excellent / fluent command over mathematics, and wielded it well as a tool, pleasantly surprised me.

Also an old photo (same day as the other one), from the time I was taking a course on social choice.
