prior games already. Pathfinder 2e is well designed and does exactly what it sets out to do, which in a select group of people's minds is an identical mission to dnd - but what dnd lacks is a feature for many of its players, and filling that in with a Mandatory label is not their idea of fun!

Yeah. Part of which is just the culture where a popular game with many players at various levels of intensity will naturally branch out and running the game will vary table to table, e.g. we'd probably see "looser rules" Pathfinder subculture in dnd's place if dnd really had died.
