I did a couple things recently where I got the opportunity to talk to college students about the creative process and why so-called AI is robbing them of experiencing the joy and the learning that comes with that creative journey. Hearing later about how much it resonated makes me very happy!

People like feeling creative and they don’t like feeling scammed. I think it helps that I am both earnest about making things and helping other people make things and that I have a criminology background, so I also can talk about how the business models for these things are scams all the way down.

I’m just a goofus who likes drawing and art and making stuff, like rarely am I more delighted than when cutting construction paper with a pair of sharp scissors, but I also hate when people use scam tactics to sell their garbage to vulnerable people.

That joy in the struggle is where real learning sticks. Students who feel that spark tend to keep creating long after the assignment ends. Glad it landed with them. That kind of talk plants seeds for years.
