It is amazing that the Prime Minister is a walking political disaster, and the Foreign Minister is an out-and-proud racist, AND YET they're still going to win the election because Labour is coded "losers" and the Greens are coded "innumerate woke shoplifters". Opposition can't get any traction.

My "all vibes, no evidence" takes on electoral politics have never failed us yet, and the "vibe" is overwhelmingly that the swing voters don't take Labour or the Greens seriously. They consider National completely useless but are going to shrug and say "no alternative".

No-one seriously believes that Chris Hipkins will be Prime Minister come December. I'm not saying that he definitely *won't* be - just that no-one seriously believes he will. This is the insurmountable "background noise" of the media, and what the media says the public believe, by default.

I accept your pivot from apathy to blaming the media. My take is yes the media is shit but we can't just accept that. Remember the RW desires our apathy. If you state old tropes often enough, they become received wisdom. And a really scary % of voters vote for the party they think will win
