I 100% agree, having been both of these. But there is no excuse, when spending 2 million on a bike lane, for making one that isn't safe, priioritises cars at junctions and entrances etc. That's not safe for experienced cyclists, and won't attract others. Designed to fail, possibly deliberately.

That is a possibility. I'd have to see the design myself though. The prioritising cars at junctions point is often made by that subset of cyclists I referred to earlier. It is usually misleading and a reason to rubbish a scheme, when in fact it's following Dutch cycle design principles.

I'd add the prioritising of cars at junctions, isn't a choice by any subset of cyclists (apart from those who don't wish to be flattened by a car or similar), and to blame cyclists for giving way to drivers who, due to the design of schemes naturally think they have right of way, is victim blaming.

I haven't seen the design. Can you point me to it?

I'm afraid not but I'll go looking. One of the criticisms by the councillor was that there was no response to the public consultation, and that cyclists valid observations were not acted on. My point about cyclists priority is in relation to schemes locally here rather than that one however.

I found the drawings. I'm pretty sure this is the type of junction that the cyclist that was interviewed is not happy with. This design is not appealing to sport cyclists but it is fundamentally safer. It really is disingenuous of the cyclist to characterise this as giving priority to cars.

Thanks very much. I would accept the cycle lane itself is safer than a hard shoulder (if cyclists opt to use it). It is possible for TII to do a better junction design than this, which I think was the point of the person in question, and surely should be the position of all cycling advocates.

Those are just the consultation drawings but there's a note that the junction should be designed in accordance with the Cycle Design Manual. So long as that's done I don't see what the issue is.

You're at the nub of the issue now. The TII cycle design manual could do with updating, or every scheme will be less than adequate.

It was recently updated.

Naturally I'm very familiar with Dutch design, having cycled there since my teenage years, and seeing the evolution of design there. There is very little in common between that and many of the iterations I've seen here, even in the past two years. Which is such a missed opportunity, given the spend.
