People give Odysseus a lot of shit for having sex with various goddesses and then complaining about how hard it was to get home but reading the actual Odyssey it’s pretty clear that he is super traumatized, thinks the gods are out to get him, and is staying with Calypso out of fear and hopelessness

Also you can really see why people have been obsessed with this story for two thousand years The Polyphemus adventure is utterly spellbinding and fucking terrifying

Another thought is that I think it’s interesting that the story Odysseus tells the Phaeacians is usually thought of as “canon” or “true.” We see Odysseus throughout the narrative encounter someone and immediately make up a long, complex, bullshit backstory.

Obviously it’s a full quarter of the narrative and awe-inspiring and shocking and has all the stuff people remember about the Odyssey, and bits of it are externally confirmed, like the Cattle of the Sun in the very opening. But it also kinda reads like Odysseus bullshitting
