Honestly with a 9mo without a car, it'd be a logistical nightmare just to make it to his checkups. I feel like a lot of anti-car stuff comes from people who don't have kids tbh

I don't have kids but just walking around LA nearly getting murdered by drivers racing through neighbourhoods and not looking as they enter crosswalks every day has made me *LOATHE* drivers and cars so much and if I had kids I'd damned near be walking around with a metal baseball bat

I live in a pretty walkable area of north Seattle. Unquestionably, the design of streets and free parking mean the biggest risk to my kids is getting hit by a car. They are older now, so I’m less worried.

i think there's an assumption that having kids 1) makes you more dependent on cars than before, and 2) that dependency will translate into liking cars, and the idea that some people will resist that dependency as much as possible and feel frustrated by it is surprising to car-lovers

This. Especially the times when I am occasionally forced (usually when traveling) to get around everywhere by car with my kid. Regular car users do not even think about how much time they spend taking their kid in and out of the car seat but let me tell you it is a lot!!!

Two of our kids hate the car. Always have pretty much from the moment we took them home from the hospital. We started biking bc I couldn't take loading a crocodile rolling baby into the carseat and then listening to outraged wailing the whole drive anymore.

And then much of that time is spent violating their bodily autonomy, holding them down screaming while you strap them into what is basically an isolation chair facing the back seat I loved riding a bike or taking transit with them.

And once a kid is old enough to ride as a regular passenger, it's time to start school. When driving a kid to school is the only way to get there, that adds a major time sink for parents/caretakers especially with multiple children attending different schools.
