As someone who grew up in Scotland and hiked a lot off the beaten track, infamously damp is absolutely it - high summer and your boot sinking to the ankle in wet peat and moss. The idea this is on fire is quite horrifying; was reading elsewhere that peat fires can spread underground, too :-(
