I can confirm that studios are obsessed with these and with getting them right. The success of YouTube shorts and, like, TikTok, Instagram, et al has caused something close to panic. A deluge is coming.

my brother is a temporarily embarrassed actor in Los Angeles and just about the only jobs available are for “short form vertical content”. He’s trying to get a role on a Chinese micro-soap

Man, YouTube Shorts are successful? I always resent having to scroll past that row to videos I'm interested in.

I’ve talked to @catacalypto.bsky.social about this before, but it’s not just the film studios who are worried short-form vertical video. Many (most?) games executives believe they too are in competition for eyeballs with the infinite video scroll feed.

is this like everybody 10 years ago freaking out about Snapchat stories and adding them to their app, regardless of how fit for purpose they were? I guess we still have some vestiges of that hanging around but also remember "fleets" lmao

I want to imagine that decreasing costs of production in general will allow for more boutique firms to pop up, to produce more ambitious/niche content. I don't know if I can imagine it, but I want to

I am so intrigued as to what the decision making process is

Honest question: is this not just a rerun of what Quibi tried?

Quibi was directionally correct just too early.

No, this is never going to work. No studio can compete with millions of idiots just trying stuff and an algorithm to winnow out the hits. A billion idiots could never make Citizen Kane, but no studio could ever make "Hawk Tuah"

The popularity of vertical micro-dramas in China says otherwise. No reason to believe english language versions wouldn't be popular, as they are just extremely fast paced and ridiculously over the top soap operas.

I can already say my students who read BL manga and talked about Heated Rivalry also talk about their favorite BL vertical dramas.

Boy-love. MLM romance.

I think Quibi’s problem is they launched in April 2020. Their audience of people killing time on their commutes or waiting for someone in public disappeared

Quibi was like 10x too long

Lighting w @reckless.bsky.social bat signal on the economics of this being trash for studios
