I feel like this mostly happens around really popuplar guys or small, schoolyard-like groups of people. There are still many good natures artists out there! But I always cringe when I see people use their art as currency >_<

Hmm, I know what you mean. *scratches head* Well, I haven't managed yet to get into the higher ranks through trades or collabs, or to be part of their inner circle.... But some people just like to draw pictures of their idols to feel closer to them. That doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing.

oh yeah! I don't think this relates to people drawing fanart for their idols. I mostly saw it in artist spaces / bigger friend groups with kinda weird / elitist rules/group dynamics and quickly changing friendships.

That's a scary thought... How can you tell if they're using it as a way to promote themselves? <.< What if they're not just gifts given out of friendship? (You can also send me a PM.)
