The real part that spins me out, is that he HAS lots of money, but it seems to have not poisoned his soul like it does for most. Ten years ago, we would think "ah, seems nice". Today he stands out so much more due to being a good person. Once of few in that line of "work". I'm a fan.

I mean, he's not hurting for food or shelter, but he doesn't have a "lot" of money; I don't think his net broke a million? Certainly not buy-media-platforms-for-propaganda kind of money.

Ah, makes sense. It must have been from "the other" place, that he was a billionaire, or close. Regardless, he seems like a very good human.

not remotely. prior to this job he made, like, 170k, and his wife is an illustrator. they're doing better than a lot of people their age in NYC but not even close to practicing lawyer or doctor levels - "decently successful 30something" is a good descriptor

To be fair, his parents provided a strong safety net that most don't have, but even the family wealth isn't exactly "generational." Mira Nair is successful, but more to the tune of $20m than $200m. (I'm a lawyer in NYC so this is not a knock on Zohran.)

He describes himself as a nepo-baby, even. Like, he's doing quite well, knows why, but isn't "rich" as I typically use the word, so I try to be specific, ya know?

yeah, he is indistinguishable from like 90% of upper-middle-class kids in a wealthy suburb. "well-to-do" is a good way to put it. also impressive that he went into public service and didn't rely on family connections for some BS $250k/yr consulting job right out of school

Not an NY resident but I can tell you kids in London from the same background rarely have the self awareness to not just recognise but check themselves over their privilege. As you say he's very much an outlier and a charismatic one at that.

The parent thing is why his salary and personal net worth don't tell the whole story. But at the same time, you see people acting like he's a Coppola, which overstates the level of his mother's financial success.

There's also this whole "his parents are famous, therefore they must be rich" thing that went around and, like, Mira Nair makes beautiful films but Queen of Katwe is not bring in Spielberg-level money.

Makes a difference to have parents who actually parent, love & support their child, instill morals and principles, and spend time with them, rather than see children as an accessoryor a goal. He didn't arise in a vacuum & proof that a lot of people, especially the rich, shouldn't have kids.
