OTD 80 yrs ago, President Harry Truman signed the Atomic Energy Act of 1946, transferring control over nuclear weapons from the US Army’s Manhattan Engineer District to the new Atomic Energy Commission, thus establishing civilian control of nuclear weapons and nuclear energy (as of January 1, 1947).
