It is amazing that the 250th anniversary of America was pretty much just not a thing. You could tell all the companies thought it would be, they had 250th ketchup and ice cream and energy drinks but all we got was a shit ass fair that no one went to

have article about this coming out next week but it takes state capacity to make a thing! the 200th was an incredible bureaucratic project; the first term of the regime did nothing they needed to to get ready for 250, in the second term they fired, sidelined, expropriated everyone who would do it

I have images of the parades down the Hudson River, but I haven’t shared them barely at all for this lack of enthusiasm!

And the Biden administration, to be fair, was probably right to be more worried about other things than about this. But yeah, it’s sad, and I feel bad for the kids who might have really enjoyed a 250th in another timeline. bsky.app/profile/semm...

How woke was the bicentennial? Check out the “Contributors to the Cause” stamps: a woman, a Black man who bought his way to freedom, and two immigrants (one from Portugal, one a Polish Jew). Simpler times—a time when stamps, like the bicentennial, could excite a kid. Nothing wrong with that.

Oh! Love to read that.. Where? I was 11 years old at an American school in Switzerland, and I remember the celebrations!
