I don't like people pulling others up about spelling and language. It's a dick move. I'm likely dyslexic, I cannot spell for toffee and rely on spellcheckers, which don't catch homophones & homonyms. For me it can be quite upsetting & mortifying. And for what, a few smugness points? Get stuffed.

Smug “acktually” corrections are awful, but some light teasing between friends or followers is fine in my book. I like surreal humour and it’s fun to imagine how the meaning of sentences change with particular typos.

I won't correct anyone on SM, unless it's a joke (I often shout "fewer" at people using less, but it's not serious) however I will pull my children up on the correct use of language constantly, spoken and written, because whilst on SM it's unimportant, it can be in business settings

The only condition I use is that what is being said is understood. Provided that is met, we are having a perfectly fine time. Exception: if what is being said is deliberately not meant to be understood, that's cool too. It's descriptive usage rather than prescriptive, right?

Which means that if you understand enough to pull someone up on a typo, then you also understand enough of what is being said to ignore the typo.

I, quite correctly, got blocked by an account I loved at the Bad Place for taking the mick out of a post that just made no sense. I wouldn't do it again. Mainly because my posts are often filled with gibberish, typos and whatnot.

I’m a subeditor. But it’s SUCH a dick move… and honestly, I think you’d have to be 100% perfect ALL THE TIME to do it anyway. Which no one is. I restrict myself to ONLY correcting the dyslexic BF on *LAID* (not layed, dear heart). For a joke… The only time I’d consider it is if people are MEAN

100% agree (& not just as a habitual phat thumbed typo-er 🙃). If you understand what is being said then: mission accomplished. I worked in publishing and can spell & use grammar pretty well* but recognise it’s a) a privilege and b) a fluke that I have that ability - no reflection of inherent worth!

I get that in some contexts it's incredibly important to get things spot on. But posting on social media or in messages between friends it's really not important, as you say it's usually understood and correcting mistakes doesn't help at all.

Absolutely 100% to "If you understand what is being said then: mission accomplished". Really winds me up - same with mispronunciation. Just don't be a dick.

Agreed. The only time querying an error is acceptable is if you legit don't understand the word/meaning (and be tactful) or the writer has ASKED for proofreading. Otherwise, read on and ignore it. Lots of dyslexic, foreign language writers, folk deprived of educational opportunities out here.

Similarly, if someone pronounces a word wrong in speech, unless you know them OR are asked to help them improve their speech, don't comment on it, again unless you legit don't understand the meaning. If you do feel it's vital to challenge, ask permission to correct pronunciation first.

Cos I’m a copywriter a lot of my mates are mortified if they send me anything with errors and I’m like oh honey you don’t think I am also the queen of typos?! The only error that irritates me is incorrect use of your/you’re and their/there.

I’m having a ‘mare here today I am well educated but for my faults become lax and do not bother with convention as hard fast rules - possibly as mix with a wide variety of people, brought up differently - so I too bash stuff out in a hurry I’d never be that kind of pedant and it’s affecting me

I'm constantly misspelling things on here. I'm writing digitally-ephemeral stuff on my phone; there's no reason to worry about the specifics of language use (deliberate or inadvertent) as if we're all carving commandments in stone tablets

I'm with @k2mey.eurosky.social - if the meaning's clear, who gives a fuck? Anyone upbraiding people for "bad spelling" or grammar choices or whatever the fuck is obviously a dickhead (and clearly not someone with a background in linguistics)
