Things here: 1) there is absolutely a niche market for non-pervert dweebs who want these things, and it's likely enough in itself to support a small industry BUT 2) this will never happen because every non-pervert dweeb who might otherwise buy them is also aware that they are the pervert glasses

Yes, I help someone set his up because he is blind and uses them to read things for him, or tell him what's in front of him. But that's not a mass market thing.

It depends on how you mean "mass market" honestly, I used to work for a multi-billion dollar firm that makes hearing aids, and blindness is on a par as an industry with that potential. The problem is how do you visually distinguish the blind people ones from the pervert ones?!

Yeah I guess you could have a white stick/retriever in hi-vis thing where a) everyone knows what it means b) you can legitimately sanction [in the broad sense, not necessarily through criminal law] people for faking it

I mean the Rowling terf toilet perverts are relatively straightforward, using a camera in toilets like that is pretty much illegal everywhere in Australia. Charge them.

Yeah. The meta glasses problem is a good whack that they don't look like cameras and they're always pointing where you're looking exactly like smartphones don't (which is also half the reason they're potentially useful for augmented reality and accessibility).

This means that the disability ones need to have a bright "not recording" light or similar, though, unless we're going to make everyone take them off when they have a piss

Agreed. Modern hearing aids *are* recording devices, which can be a problem (I left the industry before reliable AI transcription started but it's surely more of one now) - but at least they have the public perception advantage of starting as hearing aids, rather than being a subset of pervert aids

I think that's it. The smartglasses problem is fundamentally they're first to market from misanthropic tech companies as gimmicky mass market toys rather than through the accessibility, medical device, serious tools pathway that would have engendered a more thoughtful introduction into society.

My guess is east Asia will regulate the crap out of these to be acceptable for specific uses while the west is in a quandary of basically open slather vs absolute prohibition (like drones have been)
