August 6, 1945 at 8:15 a.m. more than 70,000 people died instantly when the US detonated an atomic bomb over Hiroshima, Japan. About 70,000 more died by the end of the year. 90% of the dead were civilians. Three days later the US detonated a second bomb over Nagasaki.
