i think this is no longer the predominant theory in political science but wasn't there a longstanding view that transitions to PR mostly happened because the less unified non-socialist parties thought it would avoid them being locked out of power permanently

Notably Reform only got just over half the second prefs from Tories and Restore. Labour got almost three quarters of second prefs from Greens/Libs. Right more split than left.
